Meet Dan McGonigle: Construction Official “Plus”

If you have ever needed a building permit or had a zoning question you have more than likely met or talked with Dan McGonigle. Dan serves as our Construction Official, Building Inspector, and Zoning Officer along with other responsibilities.

Dan hails from the Kensington section of Philadelphia but came to New Jersey in the early 1970’s. He started his career as a carpenter apprentice while attending evening college at Temple University. He received journeyman status as a carpenter at the same time he earned his degree in Industrial Vocational Education. Dan taught carpentry for 6 ˝ years in Philadelphia and New Jersey prior to starting his own business as a builder. Dan eventually took the state required courses and national exam for his Building and Construction Official License. In the mid 1980’s Dan became employed as a Construction Official in the City of Camden. He moved on from there to working in a number of municipalities within Burlington County. He came to Southampton in 1994 replacing Mr. Dutch Robles upon his retirement.

Dan is the administrator of the Construction Office overseeing a staff of 4 part-time inspectors as well as a full time technical assistant. He is available to the public to answer questions regarding all aspects of building and zoning. He reviews and approves building permits, zoning applications and pineland related issues. He also oversees Code Enforcement issues within the township. Other responsibilities include conducting yearly inspections of all used car lots, junkyards, mobile home parks and certain agriculture uses for licensing. Along with his building inspections he also inspects all dwellings that are utilized as rental properties. Dan also has the responsibility of being available on a 7 day /24 hours notice for unsafe as well as fire damaged structures and other emergency situations. An example of this was his involvement in our flood crisis. He inspected most of the flood damaged dwellings for safety and habitability and provided guidance to the homeowners. Even though this crisis happened in July he is still involved with the residents that were affected. Dan takes his job very seriously and recognizes his numerous responsibilities. Sometimes applicants do not understand the need for certain criteria in obtaining a Construction Permit. Dan spends the time necessary with each applicant to provide them with the appropriate information necessary for them to have a better understanding of what is required and why.

Dan lives with his wife Mandy and their children along the Rancocas Creek. He is a member of various technical organizations which relate to his job. He is also involved in numerous non-profit organizations. Dan has been a member of a second line marching club in New Orleans for 22 years. Each year he faithfully attends Mardi Gras to march with his club. He wouldn’t miss it for the world.
