Southampton 2030:  Visioning for the Future

Southampton Township Committee has initiated a long term community visioning process following the guidelines of the State of New Jersey Office of Smart Growth.   The process requires self assessment, visioning and planning.  These steps are in process and are being led by a Plan Endorsement Advisory Committee.  This page contains news and updates on the progress of the advisory committee's work.

The Committee has  prepared a Municipal Self Assessment, which can be found on the website of the New Jersey State Department of Community Affairs. The Site also provides the State's response to our Self-Assessment, a document entitled "Opportunities & Constraints Analysis" Both documents can be accessed by going to http://www.nj.gov/dca/divisions/osg/plan/pe.html. Under the heading of "Plan Endorsement", scroll down to Burlington County - Southampton and click on either document.

NOTE: THE SECOND COMMUNITY FORUM ORIGINALLY TENTATIVELY SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 28 HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL WE HEAR BACK FROM THE NJ OFFICE OF SMART GROWTH CONCERNING OUR COMMENTS ON THEIR OPPORTUNITIES AND CONSTRAINTS REPORT TO US. HOPEFULLY THE MEETING WILL BE HELD IN LATE APRIL OR EARLY MAY.

Continuing Southampton's participation in the Plan Endorsement Process sponsored by the New Jersey Office of Smart Growth, the Plan Endorsement Advisory Committee held a community forum on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at Southampton School #3. Sixty-four members of the community attended, despite frigid weather. This was just one of several community meetings coordinated by the Plan Endorsement Advisory Committee.

The focus of the grant is "Rural Sustainability," wherein the Township looks ahead up to 20 years to determine how our township will look as anticipated growth and development takes place. The session on January 17 was open ended and a free flow of ideas was encouraged with the assistance of consultants from The College of New Jersey and The New Jersey Institute of Technology. Click on the link below for a summary of the topics which emerged from the discussion and the issues articulated by the attendees.

Community Visioning Notes - January 17, 2009

Anyone wishing to comment on these notes can contact the Chairman of the Plan Endorsement Committee, Joe Laufer, at Webmaster@SouthamptonNJ.org. If you wish to be personally interviewed about your views on Southampton's future, you may use the same email address to request a call from a member of the Advisory Committee.

A follow-up Community Forum was originally scheduled for March 28, 2009, but has been postponed indefinitely until we receive a response from the N.J. Office of Smart Growth to our comments on their "Opportunities and Constraints Analysis" We anticipate that that meeting will be held in late April or early May. We will post it on the website.

The Committee has already prepared a Municipal Self Assessment, which can be found on the website of the New Jersey State Department of Community Affairs.
